BANGOR – People will mobilize Oct. 1 in more than 12 communities to participate in tree lighting ceremonies to honor lives lost, lives saved and those who support people escaping abusive relationships, according to the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence.
Gov. John Baldacci proclaimed October Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Trees will be lit from Presque Isle to Sanford to raise awareness about the epidemic of domestic violence.
Sixteen of the 25 people killed since January in Maine were murdered by a family member or intimate partner.
In Maine, someone calls a domestic violence hot line every 12 minutes.
It is estimated that 151,000 Maine women experience physical or sexual violence at the hands of an intimate partner at some point during their lifetime, according to MCEDV.
