ETNA – The Etna and Newport fire departments rushed to the scene of a blaze that destroyed a 11/2- story home at 1212 Lakins Road, Route 143 on Monday night.
At 11:35 p.m. the Penobscot Regional Communications Center contacted the Etna Fire Department and a minute and a half later a neighbor also did so, both reporting a large fire at the residence. The Newport Fire Department was called to provide mutual aid and its tanker.
“We arrived four to five minutes later to find flames shooting through the roof of the house,” Etna Fire Chief Walter Gibbons said. “We launched an attack with master streams and deck guns and were able to put out the fire in about 45 minutes.”
Crews from eight surrounding towns contained the fire to the house and garage. The roof and interior of the house were lost, leaving just the walls and unsalvageable debris behind. The garage escaped major damage and remains standing. No firefighters were injured.
The residents of the home were not present, but neighbors informed volunteers that pets may have been trapped in the house. No pets were located in or around the home during the search, though the wreckage has yet to be fully examined for remains.
Firefighters spent three to four hours securing the scene after the flames had been extinguished and another two hours at the station afterward. They returned to their homes around 5:30 a.m. The fire marshal’s office has yet to determine the cause of the fire.
