CANDIDATE PROFILE

House District 21

Part of Brewer

Democrat

Ruth-Marie Spellman

Age: not filled in

Hometown: Brewer

Address: 58 Hillcrest Drive

Web site:

Education: Graduate of John Bapst High School; attended University of Maine

Family: Married to Roland Spellman; three children, four grandchildren

Occupation: Real estate broker

Experience: Served on Brewer School Board for 29 years (1977-2006); elected Brewer High School trustee in 2007; member of the United Technologies Center board of directors for 25 years (12 years as chairwoman); former member of the Maine School Board Association; member of the board of directors of Project Atrium for more than 20 years; community volunteer for many organizations; co-owned a small family business in Brewer for many years.

Reason for running: I’ve lived in Brewer my entire life. I know the people and share their values and concerns. A strong economy and a first-rate education are the keys to a better Maine. One can’t happen without the other. With my experience as a small-business owner and as a longtime member of the Brewer School Board, I feel I am uniquely qualified to represent Brewer in the state Legislature.

Republican

Michael Celli

Age: 53

Hometown: Brewer

Address: 42 Gettysburg Ave.

Web site:

Education: BS in education, University of Texas at Austin

Family: Married to Ellen; 2 sons: Ryan and Aaron

Occupation: Disabled

Experience: Brewer City Council, seven years

Reason for running: I want to bring the same success we have had in Brewer to the rest of the state. There is too much partisanship between parties. Party affiliation should end after the election, because our party then is the people of Maine. We need more diplomacy and less partisanship in order to get things done. I also want to freeze valuations and tax rates for seniors on fixed incomes under a certain yearly income range.
