A Bangor woman who was arrested for driving under the influence Monday night apparently became belligerent and assaulted two Penobscot County Jail deputies.

“She was uncooperative from the start,” Bangor police Sgt. Bob Bishop said Tuesday. “She tried to escape from the booking room.”

Angela Hollis, 45, of Saratoga Avenue was taken to the county jail in Bangor after her arrest just after 5:30 p.m. and two female intake officers were called to handle her, Bishop said. Hollis refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test, but she was visibly impaired, the police report states.

Hollis assaulted the two jail corrections officers, and was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, a Class C felony. If convicted of the assaults, Hollis could face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 for each count. She was released after her court appearance Tuesday, a jail official said. Bangor High School was briefly evacuated Wednesday after a bomb threat was found scrawled on a bathroom wall.

The threat, which proved groundless, was discovered about 11:45 a.m., according to Superintendent Betsy Webb.

Students were readmitted to the school after administrators and police searched the building and deemed it safe. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

A Brewer man who was armed with a handgun faces felony charges after being arrested Saturday night, Brewer police Sgt. Arden Jones said Tuesday.

Police were called to the home of John Surles, 40, for a reported domestic assault just after 4:30 a.m. and found several broken windows and Surles with a loaded handgun, which officers removed from his custody, Smith said.

Surles was charged with assault, criminal mischief, possession of marijuana, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and aggravated reckless conduct with a firearm. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and later was released, a jail official said.

The criminal threatening and aggravated reckless conduct charges are both felonies, but the exact level of the charges has not been determined, Smith said. If convicted of a Class C felony, the lowest felony level, Surles would face up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

A Glenburn man faces several charges in connection with an auto theft and several vehicle break-ins in Orono.

Levi Ashley, 19, was arrested about 4:30 a.m. Sunday after he was stopped while driving a stolen car by Veazie Patrolman Brian Sirois, Orono police Sgt. Scott Scripture said Tuesday.

Scripture said police began looking for the stolen vehicle after it was reported missing from a home on Forest Avenue in Orono about 3:30 a.m.

After police stopped him, Ashley reportedly admitted to police not only that he’d stolen the car, but also that he had broken into several other vehicles in Orono, Scripture said. At least eight residents have filed theft complaints since then.

Police found a plastic bag of pills in Ashley’s possession at the time of his arrest. Scripture said Ashley “thought they were Vicodin.”

So far, Ashley has been charged with stealing drugs, several counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and possession of alcohol by a minor. Other charges might be pending. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

In another Orono case, a Glenburn man faces several charges stemming from a dispute with a friend who declined Sunday night to help him celebrate his 21st birthday.

Police were called to the friend’s home at about 12:50 a.m. Monday for what a neighbor thought was a family fight. When officers arrived, they found David Walton Jones III with a bloody lip and chipped tooth.

According to Orono police Sgt. Scott Scripture, Jones was intoxicated and upset when he barged into his friend’s home and punched him in the head.

The friend and a roommate managed to push Jones outside but he kicked in the door, breaking the frame and the lock. Jones’ girlfriend tried to stop him, but he pushed her aside into the bushes.

After a quick medical exam, Jones was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor. He faces two counts of assault and one count each of criminal trespass and criminal mischief. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
