Red Cross makes plea to boost blood supply

BANGOR – Blood inventories diminished as heavy rains kept potential donors at home last weekend.

“As we continue to work to make up the shortfall, Red Cross blood drives scheduled over the weekend were not as successful as expected. Heavy rains kept some donors from coming out to give blood,” said Susan Parmer, CEO for the American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern New England Region.

Parmer noted that blood drives scheduled on weekends provide added convenience to donors and have become increasingly important to an adequate blood supply.

Donors of all blood types are urged to visit Red Cross blood drives this week to keep supplies plentiful for patients in need. All donors at Red Cross blood drives during the current playoff season will be eligible to win a Boston Red Sox playoff package, including a pair of playoff tickets to Fenway Park, hotel accommodations and a $50 gas card. $200 worth of home heat will also be awarded in the drawing.

The Bangor Donor Center at 900 B Hammond St. is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 in Maine with parental consent), be in good health and must weigh 110 pounds or more. Blood may be donated through the Red Cross every eight weeks.
