BLUE HILL – Blue Hill Public Library is offering a hand-held electronic magnifier called a “MonoMouse” on a trial basis next month as part of a loan program designed to help visually impaired members of the community. The trial program will help the library staff decide whether they want to purchase the devices.
The magnifier, which looks like an oversized computer mouse, is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in the palm of a user’s hand. It connects to any television through the attached standard RCA plug. The user presses a button on the mouse and moves it across a page of text. The text appears large and clear on the television screen, making small text especially easy to read.
With the Bierley MonoMouse, patrons with visual impairment, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, may now be able to borrow a regular print book from the library and enjoy reading it at home.
The MonoMouse devices will be checked out to patrons for a week during the trial period but may be loaned for longer periods in the future if the library decides to make the program permanent.
The library also has a selection of large print books to choose from in the circulating collection.
