ORONO – The University of Maine women charged out to a 3-1 lead after two periods and held on to defeat the University of North Dakota 3-2 in their ice hockey season opener Friday.

Lexie Hoffmeyer and Jenna Ouellette scored first-period goals for the 1-0 Black Bears. Amy Stech added an insurance goal in the second. Vanessa Vani provided two assists. Jordan Coliliton, Melissa Gagnon, Ouellette and Hoffmeyer had assists. Genevieve Turgeon recorded 46 saves.

Kelly Lewis scored in the second period for 0-1 North Dakota. Sara Dagenais added a third-period goal at 17:41. Stephanie Roy, Marie Poirier and Melissa Jacques provided assists. Brittany Kirkham saved 15 shots.

Women’s soccer

UMass Boston 2, USM 0

At Boston, Erika Marsters scored off a Kristi Morales assist 12:46 into the first half Thursday to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston past the University of Southern Maine of Gorham.

Samantha Place had an unassisted goal less than a minute later for 3-5 UMass Boston. Ashley McRoberts turned away five of seven shots.

Alison Bradley made 16 saves on 30 shots for the 3-5 Huskies.
