The two candidates in Maine’s 1st District congressional race said they oppose the Wall Street bailout bill that was passed by the House and Senate and signed Friday by President Bush.
Democrat Chellie Pingree and Republican Charles Summers say the $700 billion measure does not do enough to protect taxpayers and prevent a similar financial crisis in the future.
The candidates outlined their positions before House members passed the bill Friday.
Pingree and Summers are seeking the seat being vacated by Democrat Tom Allen, who voted in favor of the rescue plan Monday. Maine’s other congressman, Democrat Michael Michaud, opposed the bill.
