OXFORD – The town of Oxford, home to Maine’s best-known stock car racetrack, is putting out the welcome mat for a proposed $150 million resort and casino that a Las Vegas developer is promoting in a Nov. 4 statewide referendum.

After a presentation Thursday from Olympia Gaming, the Board of Selectmen unanimously passed a resolution in support of the project.

The town’s Economic Development Advisory Committee also backed the proposed casino, and panel member Daniel O’Neill said he thinks Olympia is looking at Oxford because of its location and access to a major highway.

Oxford, along Route 26, is the site of Oxford Plains Speedway, which draws big crowds during racing season.

O’Neill said Rumford and an undisclosed town are also in the running for the casino project.

Olympia says it will announce the proposed location by the end of the week.
