Williams lifts Husson past Mount Ida

NEWTON, Mass. – Julius Williams ran for two touchdowns and 200 yards to lead Husson University to a 16-12 college football win over Mount Ida College Saturday.

Husson’s Eagles nursed a 3-0 lead (on a Darren Gauthier 32-yard field goal) for three quarters before both teams combined for 25 points in the fourth.

A 35-yard TD run by Williams started things early in the fourth quarter and the Mustangs answered with a 1-yard TD run by Bobby Hemmann. Husson came back to make it 16-6 via a Williams 3-yard TD run and PAT kick with 2:22 to play and Mount Ida responded with a touchdown pass just 53 seconds later to make it 16-12, but failed to recover the ensuing onside kick and Husson ran out the clock.

Husson’s James McCandles completed nine of 19 passes for 121 yards.

Mount Ida’s Kyle Watkins had seven catches for 146 yards and a touchdown.

At Westfield, Mass., Travis Shaw caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Angell with 1:34 left in the game to give the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners the victory.

Angell completed 5 of 11 passes for 114 yards. He also ran for 82 more yards and two more touchdowns on 15 carries. Star tailback Jim Bower was held to 70 yards and one TD on 19 carries, but MMA’s defense held the Owls to 243 total yards as the Mariners improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the New England Football Conference’s Bogan division.

Cody Andrews led MMA’s defense with five tackles and two sacks.

Westfield State’s Dan Cohen completed 25 of 40 passes for four TDs and 186 yards.
