Driver charged in fatal accident Detroit man accused of manslaughter, OUI

TROY – The driver of the pickup truck involved in a fatal accident early Sunday morning on Route 220 has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.

Detroit resident Charles Erickson, 30, driver of a 1987 Chevrolet pickup that rolled over at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, appeared in Waldo County Superior Court on Monday afternoon, said Stephen McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety. Erickson was jailed on $250,000 cash bail.

Erickson was carrying two passengers when his truck skidded off Route 220 and rolled over. The driver lost control and tried to overcorrect the skid, police said.

One of the passengers, Scott Goulette of Detroit, died at the scene from injuries suffered in the accident, said McCausland.

Goulette was sitting in the middle of the cab at the time of the crash. The roof partially collapsed on him when the truck rolled over and he suffered a head injury, McCausland said.

Three other state troopers assisted Trooper Thomas Welch, who is in charge of the investigation, at the scene, McCausland said.

Erickson is being held at Waldo County Jail.
