PORTLAND – A Venezuelan described as one of the hottest global artists has been chosen to apply his creativity to fuel storage tanks in South Portland.
Jaime Gili’s proposal to paint the tanks in pastel triangular forms was chosen by the Maine Center for Creativity as the winning design for Sprague Energy’s tanks, which are visible from Interstate 295, from the air and from boats off the coast. Gili’s selection was announced Wednesday.
Bates College Museum of Art Director Mark Bessire calls Gili “one of the hottest global artists.”
Gili calls this project, which will cover 261,000 square feet, his biggest so far. He was chosen from 560 entries from 73 countries.
The project involves painting the tops of 16 oil tanks and the sides of eight of them.
