CANDIDATE PROFILE

Vote 2008 House District 37 Blue Hill area

Republican

Jonathan W. Walden

Age: 34

Hometown: Surry (born in South Berwick, went to High School in Greenville)

Address: 1214 Toddy Pond Road, Surry, ME 04684

Education: Two years at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, studied business administration

Family: Married seven years; three children

Occupation: Rearing three young children at home

Experience: I am an elected member of the Surry school board. I have gone door to door for months now experiencing firsthand what people are dealing with. I will take this experience to Augusta and make decisions based on what is best for Maine and the Blue Hill peninsula in particular.

Reason for running: To create many jobs in Maine to expand our tax base to improve the infrastructure, schools and the polluted coastal areas of the Blue Hill peninsula. Maine’s many rivers, woods and ocean currents will provide inexpensive, inexhaustible electricity that fuels the creation of a new technology industry in the state. If the state heads in the right direction, taxpayers will become plentiful.

Democrat

James M. Schatz

Age: 68

Hometown: Blue Hill

Address: 8 Owens Lane

Education: BA in anthropology, University of Colorado; MA in correctional administration, University of Colorado.

Family: Married; four children

Occupation: Innkeeper

Experience: Five-term selectman in Blue Hill; two-term representative

Reason for running: My experience, education and training in the public and private sector have not only stimulated my interest in running for this office, they also have helped me develop the skills and temperament necessary to address the challenges facing our state and, more specifically, our rural-coastal towns. … As an innkeeper I understand the need to accommodate, as a businessman and an elected official I know how to work with structure, limited resources and appreciate the value of teamwork and independent thinking.
