BANGOR – A Canadian man was arrested Thursday at the Milltown border crossing in Calais, and charged with selling oxycodone last month in Washington County.

Matthew Stanley, 25, of Campobello, New Brunswick, is charged with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Margaret Kravchuk on Friday ordered Stanley detained temporarily. A bail hearing is scheduled to be held Tuesday in federal court in Bangor.

With the help of a confidential informant working with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Stanley allegedly was recorded selling five 80-milligram oxycodone pills for $500 on Sept. 24 in Washington County.

Stanley told an undercover agent at that exchange that he could get 50 to 100 pills at a time and was interested in trading the drugs for guns, according to court documents.

If convicted, Stanley faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1 million.

He also could be banned from re-entering the U.S. without prior permission from immigration authorities.

A trial date has not been set.
