WM teams sweep state golf crowns

Western Maine schools were dominant at the state team golf championships at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro Saturday.

Deering of Portland earned a narrow win over Saco’s Thornton Academy in Class A, 310-316, Cony of Augusta was third in the nine-team field with 319 and Bangor was ninth with 352.

Falmouth took team honors in Class B with 319 while Houlton was five shots back at 324. York finished third among 11 teams with 328 while Belfast was fourth with 334.

Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln took sixth with 361, Presque Isle seventh with 374 and Hermon eighth with 374.

Saint Dominic of Auburn won easily in Class C, shooting a 327 to beat Wiscasset (355). Piscataquis of Guilford took third with 357, Katahdin of Stacyville was fourth (358), Central Aroostook of Mars Hill placed seventh (391) and Penquis of Milo wound up eighth (399).

Gorham’s David Gushee took home medalist honors in Class A with a 75, while Cam Roy sparked Bangor with an 82 and Jeremy Russell carded an 86.

In Class B, Ian Gervais lead Houlton’s runner-up effort with a round of 78, but Falmouth, led by Jack Wyman’s 76, had just enough to overcome the Shiretowners.

Josh Hogan shot an 82 and Conner Burfer an 88 for the Yachtsmen.

Porter Gervais and Dylan Flewelling each had 83s for Houlton while Nick Chase carded an 80 and Greg Foster a 96.

Medalist Doug Martins sparked Belfast with a 75 while Kasey Knights lifted Mattanawcook with an 88, Evan Waddell shot an 89 for Presque Isle and Bryan Day a 92 for Hermon.

In Class C, Ian Fortier shot an 84 and Garrett Artman an 88 to pace Piscataquis to a third-place showing.

Greg LaBonte and Chris Bryant shot 77 and 79, respectively, to carry Saint Dominic.

Evan McCarthy (84) led Katahdin, Orion Cochrane fired a 77 for Greenville, Sean McIntyre had an 89 for Central Aroostook and Rick Venable fired an 83 for Penquis.

Jordan Jones of Wiscasset led the field with a 74.
