OLD TOWN – Teenagers, their parents and other interested adults are invited to attend an educational forum on opiate abuse at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Old Town High School cafeteria.
Opiates, including prescription drugs such as OxyContin, Percocet and Vicodin, as well as the illegal drug heroin, are highly addictive. Area treatment providers and law enforcement officials report an increase in the number of young people abusing these drugs.
In recognition of Red Ribbon Week, an annual nationwide substance abuse awareness campaign, The Acadia Hospital has teamed up with the Old Town-Orono Rotary Club and the nonprofit River Coalition to offer the evening of education, which will feature Brent Scobie, director of substance abuse services at The Acadia Hospital.
Participants will learn about opiates and what makes them so addictive, warning signs of abuse, and things people can do if someone they know needs help. The program is offered as part of Acadia?s ?Close to Home? campaign to educate the public about substance abuse.
The free program will include a slide presentation, a short film titled ?Falling,? and a question-and-answer session. It is expected to last about 1? hours. There will be a door prize and other giveaways, including tickets to UMaine hockey games. Refreshments will be served.
