Candidates’ night

Your vote counts. The national political candidates get a lot of press, but the results of the local elections, though they may not receive as much attention, can have noticeable bearing on your everyday life. Finding information on the local candidates is not always easy.

Bangor Public Library wants to help. It will sponsor two candidates’ forums – one for candidates for Bangor City Council and one for candidates for the school committee – on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The forum for school committee candidates is set for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The forum for City Council candidates will be from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m.

Bangor City Council candidates are incumbent councilor Gerry Palmer, former councilor David Nealley, Richard Bronson, Paul Dubay, Andrew Sturgeon and Roberto Zavaleta.

School committee candidates are Phyllis Guerette and Christina Szal, who are seeking re-election, and Warren Caruso.

Michael Gleason, a retired senior master sergeant of the Air National Guard, will be the moderator.

In the City Council Forum, each candidate will be given three minutes for an introductory statement, including defining important issues that the City Council faces. Then each candidate will be given two minutes to answer the same question, which is: What can the city do to meet current economic challenges?

There will be time for questions from the audience. This year, those questions will be written on index cards and read by the moderator. Each candidate will be given three minutes for a closing statement.

The school committee forum will follow the same format with the question: What direction should the Bangor School System take to prepare students to meet the current economic challenges?

The forum will be broadcast on cable TV’s government public access station in Bangor.

Bangor residents are encouraged to attend and take part in discussions that can directly affect their future. For more information, call the library at 947-8336.
