Old Town man takes his cue Lincoln pool hall closing drew fan’s attention, so he bought it

LINCOLN – David Guthrie played pool at Shooters almost every week. He was so sad when the town pool hall and restaurant closed a few months ago, he said, that he did the only thing he could to keep it going – he bought it.

“Lincoln needs a place like this,” Guthrie, 45, of Old Town, said Wednesday. “If I didn’t buy it, my business partner would have turned it into a motel.”

A part owner of Access Owner Sales of Lincoln with Sterling “Boody” Osgood, Guthrie bought Shooters last week for an undisclosed price from owner Katie Clay.

The Town Council was due to hold a special meeting on Tuesday night to decide whether to approve gaming, liquor, special amusement and victualer’s licenses for the business, which is at 222B West Broadway, but councilors failed to draw a quorum.

Interim Town Manager Lisa Goodwin blamed scheduling conflicts. Another meeting is set for Monday.

The council’s failure to meet will delay Shooters’ reopening for about a week, Guthrie said, postponing it to Halloween weekend.

Corey Hanson of Glenburn opened Shooters in December 2004. With its eight regulation-size tables and display case full of pool cues and other equipment, Shooters was among a handful of places between Bangor and Millinocket that featured pool tables.

A full restaurant and bar were added in 2006 and the place was a staple of the nightlife in the Katahdin and Lincoln Lakes’ regions.

A former manager at Mister Mike’s restaurant, which operated in the West Broadway spot where Gillmor’s Restaurant is located, Guthrie said he hopes to run Shooters much the way that Hanson and Clay did. The restaurant area will feature live musical acts and comedy, plus teen dances.

The pool area will feature American Pool Association tournaments and, eventually, cribbage tournaments, he said.

His goal: To draw more people from the Bangor-Old Town area, he said.
