Basic Skills skating

BANGOR – The Skating Club of Maine-Penobscot Region, the local regional arm of the United States Figure Skating Association, will offer three sessions of Basic Skills skating classes at Sawyer Arena, the first session beginning Sunday, Oct. 26.

Basic Skills is a nationwide program intended to teach the correct techniques of the fundamental basic elements of skating to promote excellence in speed, recreational, figure and hockey skating.

An adult level and Introduction to Freestyle Skating also will be offered.

USA Hockey endorses the program.

Basic and adult sessions run for six weeks at a cost of $100, plus a one-time fee of $7.50 for a Basic Skills membership including liability insurance.

Introduction to Freestyle runs for six weeks at a cost of $125, plus the one-time fee of $7.50. Discounts are available for multiple-session sign-up and additional family members after the first member.

Basic Skills classes are held 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Introduction to Freestyle classes are held 5:40-6:40 p.m. consisting of a half-hour of group instruction, then a half-hour of practice ice.

The sessions run:

. Oct. 26-Nov. 30.

. Dec. 7-Jan. 11.

. Jan. 18-Feb. 22.

Fall soccer program

BANGOR – The Blackbear Youth Academy will offer an eight-week fall soccer program beginning Thursday, Oct. 23, at the University College of Bangor Fitness Center. Two age groups will be offered. A high school academy will be scheduled in December.

The Blackbear United Youth Academy focuses on developing players’ technical and tactical ability in a fun and inviting atmosphere through games and skill exercises. Participation in the academy is a supplement to other soccer and sport programs designed to help improve overall skill and comfort with the ball.

The academy schedule is:

. For 6- to 9-year-olds (coed), 5:30-6:30 p.m.; and 10- to 13-year-olds (coed), 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 23 and 30, Nov. 6, 13 and 20, Dec. 4, 11 and 18. Sessions are not held during Thanksgiving week.

Academy tuition for the fall session is $115 new players, $100 returning players, $15 per session per player.

Ski and snowboard sale

BANGOR – Penobscot Valley Ski Club will hold its 38th annual ski and snowboard equipment sale 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department building, 647 Main St.

New and used equipment including cross-country and downhill skis, boots, poles, ski wear, helmets and snowboards will be available at affordable prices. Mix and mingle with other ski enthusiasts and learn about new equipment from knowledgeable vendors from throughout New England.

The event is a nonprofit community fundraiser. Proceeds support the club’s programs such as Learn-to-Ski, Junior Racing, Caribou Bog Ski Race, Nordic events and discounted ski trips to Quebec and Sugarloaf.

The club has been involved in teaching youth skiing for more than 60 years. The club’s mission is to promote skiing and snow sports through activities, instruction and competition.

The club supports ski-related charities and encourages Maine families to get out and enjoy winter snow. Monthly meetings are held on Tuesday nights. Visit www.pvskiclub.org for details. Sports and recreation

BANGOR – These programs are scheduled at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Department, 647 Main St.:

. Young At Heart class, low impact aerobics for those age 50 and over. The class is designed for those who wish to begin a cardiovascular and strength training program. Session I classes run 9:30 and 10:14 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, Oct. 14-Dec. 12. The fee is $35 per person. Participants are advised to bring a water bottle, two 3-pound dumbbells and appropriate footwear.

. Instructional basketball for children in kindergarten through grade two beginning Saturday, Nov. 8. Children in kindergarten meet 9-10 a.m.; first-graders, 10-11 a.m.; second-graders, 11 a.m.-noon. The four-week program for boys and girls emphasizes skill development and fun. No program will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29. $30 Bangor residents, $35 others.

. Youth basketball, eight-week program is open to children in grades three through five with separate boys and girls leagues. Teams will practice one evening per week and play games on Saturdays, starting Dec. 8. $30 Bangor residents, $35 others. Add $10 late fee after Monday, Nov. 24.

. Mother-son Sportfest, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24. Moms and sons will play team games and enjoy pizza, drinks and desserts. $5 per person.
