OXFORD – Some Oxford County residents are speaking out against a casino that has been proposed for the western Maine town of Oxford.
At a gathering Wednesday, a group that included state legislators and businessman Les Otten, who once owned the Sunday River ski resort, said bringing a casino to the area is a bad idea.
Olympia Gaming of Las Vegas wants to build a $184 million casino and resort at a site along the Route 26 corridor. Maine voters will decide Nov. 4 whether to allow the project.
Former state Sen. Rick Bennett said opponents want to make sure their voices are heard. He said a casino offers “false promises” and is not the answer to economic development.
As opponents spoke outside the Oxford Public Meeting House, a group of casino supporters stood nearby and held signs in support of the project.
