ORONO – The Town Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday on an application for a $85,000 grant to start the first phase of a riverfront park and trails project.
The grant money would come from the Riverfront Community Development Program.
“The council will hear the proposal and endorse submitting an application,” town planner Evan Richert said.
The proposed 1.4-mile trail system would service the basin neighborhood near the Penobscot River and the downtown community near the Stillwater River.
The trail system would consist of two loops. The first would be a “lunchtime” loop along the Stillwater River and around the downtown section of town. The second would be a riverfront loop that would take walkers along the length of the lower Stillwater and Penobscot rivers to the basin neighborhood before looping back to the site of the new public library at the corner of Pine and Birch streets.
The trail loops would be anchored by a riverfront access park on town land at the end of Summer Street adjacent to downtown, and by a nature-based pocket park below Broadway on the Penobscot River.
Orono’s plan is similar to projects being pursued by both Bangor and Brewer.
“We’ll be competing with Brewer and Bangor, I think,” Richert said.
