Man in standoff committed to hospital

PARIS – A Lewiston man whose leap from a third-floor balcony to elude police drew national attention after it was photographed by a newsman is being committed to the state mental hospital.

Superior Court Justice Roland Cole ruled Thursday that 36-year-old Norman “Bo” Thompson is incompetent to stand trial on multiple charges in three Maine counties. His case will be postponed until Thompson is found competent.

After his well-documented leap, a Lewiston Sun-Journal photographer tackled Thompson and police arrested Thompson.

He later was involved in a 14-hour police standoff at his mother’s home.
