Calais woman injured when car drags her

CALAIS – An 83-year-old Calais woman was injured Monday when the car she had just started and stepped out of dragged her out of her driveway.

Shortly after noon, Frances Wallace was at her home on Germain Street when she went out to her car that was parked in the driveway in front of her house.

Wallace started her 1997 Hyundai and had just put it in drive when she noticed a note under her windshield wiper.

“She opened her door [and took her foot off the brake] to grab the piece of paper, and the car dragged her out to the road,” Officer Christopher Scott of the Calais Police Department said.

A neighbor noticed the trouble and called police.

Wallace was taken by ambulance to Calais Regional Hospital with a laceration to her leg.

Hospital staff said Monday afternoon that Wallace was still being evaluated.

“She is tougher than a bag of hammers,” the officer said.

Scott said police had completed the investigation.
