AUBURN – Maine police say two men who were in the country illegally bolted during a traffic stop, causing a brief drama in the city of Auburn.
Auburn police warned residents and locked down a school Tuesday after the two men from Honduras fled from Maine State Police and disappeared along railroad tracks into the woods.
Auburn and state police using a tracking dog launched a ground search Tuesday while Immigration and Naturalization Service agents searched from overhead in a helicopter. The Hondurans were captured an hour later, at about 1:30 p.m. and were taken into federal custody.
Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said the two men had passports, but he said it appears they had been doctored. The men are being held in federal custody.
