Democracy, education topic at potluck Nov. 2

TRESCOTT – The Cobscook Community Learning Center will host a potluck and evening of conversation about democracy and education at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2.

The potluck will start the evening, and the more formal conversation will begin around 6 p.m.

Jakob Erle, director of the International Academy on Education and Democracy and president of the Association for World Education, is traveling from Denmark to the U.S. and will be visiting extensively with the CCLC over the course of his trip.

Anyone interested in talking and learning about perspectives on education, democracy and active citizenship in a multilayered and multicultural world is encouraged to attend.

One focus of the discussion will be ways in which local people can link with a global network of educators through the CCLC and the AWE to address contemporary concerns that span the globe.

The CCLC has been a member of the AWE since 2007 and works regularly to strengthen international ties among educators who are interested in connections between global and local concerns.

Stephanie Bailey, CCLC board president, works with a group of local youth who make up the first-ever North American youth chapter of AWE.

Jakob also will spend time with this group of young people during his visit and will discuss with them ways in which they can work with a global network of youth.

AWE is an international, nongovernmental organization of individuals and institutions who believe that learning about ourselves and our communities is most effective and satisfying when education reflects an awareness of our intimate relationships to the world as a whole.

It was founded in 1970 and has been based in Denmark since 1974. Its goals are to promote communication and exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience related to world education – that is, the link between local and global activity and learning.

Anyone wishing to attend the potluck is invited to do so. For more information, call Kara McCrimmon at 733-2233.
