Four Maine artists awarded fellowships

AUGUSTA – Choreographer Alison Chase of Brooksville and Franco-American fiddler Don Roy, who was a performer at the 2008 American Folk Festival, have been named recipients of a Maine Arts Commission 2009 Artists’ Fellowship Award.

Chase, Penelope Schwartz Robinson of Cape Elizabeth, Randy Regnier of Portland and Roy, of Gorham, will be honored in a Nov. 21 ceremony at the Bangor Opera House.

Each artist will receive a $13,000 grant.

Chase became the commission’s Performing Arts Fellow and was a founding artistic director of Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1975. She also created Apogee Arts, which, according to her Web site, alisonchase.com, explores multidimensional storytelling, fusions of film and dance, site-specific works and museum installations.

Roy, the Traditional Arts Fellow, performed at the 2008 folk festival as part of the Franco House Party. He grew up in Rockland, according to his Web site, donroyonline.com, and also performs with the Don Roy Trio.

Robinson, the Literary Arts Fellow, has taught nonfiction writing and literature at the University of Maine at Farmington and Southern Maine Community College. She was awarded the Stonecoast Book Prize for her essay collection “Slippery Men.”

Regier, the Visual Arts Fellow, uses found objects to create sculptures which are reminiscent of old toys. He is a graduate of the Maine College of Art in Portland.

The ceremony will feature live performances from the fellowship recipients and will also celebrate the Maine Arts Commission’s 20 years of grant-making to individual artists.
