HOULTON – Although five people are running for three open seats on the Town Council, candidates for school board and other municipal seats face little competition this year.
Town Clerk Cathy O’Leary said Friday that voters would fill three open seats on the council. Incumbents Walter Goodrich and Sue Tortello are hoping to secure two of the seats. They face competition from Houlton residents Philip Bernaiche, Brian Donnelly and Carl Lord Jr.
There also are three open seats on the SAD 29 board of directors, and three people are on the ballot to fill those seats.
Incumbents Cynthia Hillman-Forbush and Elizabeth Anderson are seeking re-election to the board, and Lisa A. Harvey also is looking to garner a seat on the panel.
Two residents, Galen Hogan and James F. McPartland, are running for slots on the Houlton Water Co. board of directors.
One Houlton resident, Leigh Cummings Jr., is seeking to fill the vacant seat on the board of directors of the Cary Library.
Voters in Houlton also will be deciding whether to move forward with a proposed regional school consolidation plan.
As part of the proposal, SAD 29 in Houlton, SAD 70 in Hodgdon, SAD 14 in Danforth, Community School District 9 in Dyer Brook and the municipal units of Hersey, Moro Plantation, Orient and Bancroft would consolidate to form the Tri-County Regional School Unit. If passed, the new RSU would consist of students from parts of Aroostook, Penobscot and Washington counties.
