Water parks have long been a staple of summer, places to cool off without having to drive to the coast or the lake.
But those outdoor attractions tend to lose their allure in fall, as days shorten and temperatures drop.
Fortunately, indoor water parks aren’t the novelty they used to be. In fact, another one opened earlier this year just over the New Hampshire border.
Kahuna Laguna debuted during February school vacation at the Red Jacket Mountain View resort, located off the main drag in North Conway. It’s 40,000 square feet and uses 190,000 gallons of water. It features an air temperature of 84 degrees and a water temperature of 83.
“It’s been going great,” said David Beaudoin, the resort’s general manager. “It’s been a huge help to the hotel.”
The highlight of Kahuna Laguna, which is open 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, is four three-story slides, two open and two enclosed, used for body and inner-tube sliding.
Other features at the water park include a giant wave pool, a 100-gallon tipping bucket and play area, kiddie slides, water basketball, a 20-person hot tub and a snack bar.
Guests are protected by attentive lifeguards throughout the park.
Each pool has its own giant sand filtration system, and all chemicals are added by computerized controls, Beaudoin explained. The park also uses the most advanced UV technology to sanitize the pools.
Kahuna Laguna is but the latest updating at the hotel, Beaudoin said. Other family-friendly activities include movie nights and Wii video-game tournaments.
The Red Jacket Mountain View, situated atop Sunset Hill, is on the site of the Birchmont Mansion and the former estate of Payson Tucker, manager of Maine Central Railroad in the 1890s.
A Best Western property and one of seven Red Jacket hotels, it features 148 rooms, including jacuzzi rooms and family lofts, and 12 two-bedroom townhouses.
Amenities include Champney’s Restaurant (named after the famed Vermont painter) with its frequent buffets, Palmer’s Red Ridge Grill, a seasonal outdoor pool, a full-service spa, the Aloha Arcade and a fitness room.
That way, when added to Kahuna Laguna, there’s plenty to do without ever leaving the property.
Rates for a visit to the hotel and Kahuna Laguna will depend on the time of year and the package chosen. For more, visit www.redjacketmountainview.com or call 800-RJACKET.
