PORTLAND – A stronger U.S. dollar could be bad news for Maine’s tourism and export industries.

Canada is the state’s largest trading partner. On Thursday, the Canadian dollar was worth 80 cents U.S. after running roughly on par with the dollar for most of the year. That’s disappointing for a lot of Maine businesses, according to economist David VanderLinden, an associate professor of finance at the University of Southern Maine.

Tourism is the state’s largest industry, and Canadians account for the majority of foreign visitors.
