Brewer, Hampden record upsets

FARMINGTON – The No. 10 Brewer Witches converted four penalty kicks to Mt. Blue’s two to beat the No. 7 Cougars 2-1 in an Eastern Maine Class A schoolboy soccer prelim Saturday.

Brewer’s Ryan Nadeau, Evan Nadeau, Brian Kelley and Chris Shedd scored on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie through two overtimes. The Witches made four of five penalty-kick attempts while Mt. Blue converted two of four attempts.

Luke Thomas put 6-7-2 Brewer up 1-0 with 24:45 left in the first half off a Yuhi Sasaki assist. Brian Kearns saved nine of 17 shots.

Sam Mungin tied it at 1-1 with 11:55 remaining in regulation for 9-5-1 Mt. Blue. Devin Zamboni made seven saves off 14 shots.

Saturday’s prelim winners advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinal round.

Hampden 2, Lewiston 1 (OT)

At Lewiston, Abdullah Al Khayyat scored off a Kevin Angelinetta assist 2:01 into overtime to push No. 9 Hampden Academy past No. 8 Lewiston.

Austin Michaud put 9-4-2 Hampden up 1-0 with 35:37 left in the first half with an Angelinetta assist. Alex Long tied it with 32:20 remaining in the second half off an Ali Hersi assist for 8-6-1 Lewiston.

Brad Melanson stopped four of six shots for the Broncos while Lewiston’s Chris Jacques made three saves on six shots.

Class B

MDI 3, Gardiner 1

At Gardiner, Abe Gladstone scored two goals as the No. 9 Mount Desert Island Trojans beat the No. 8 Gardiner Tigers.

Gladstone scored a goal in the first half and a penalty-kick goal in the second for the 8-6-1 Trojans. Dennis O’Neil also had a second-half goal off a Jeremy Hyde assist. Jake Minctons saved five of nine shots.

Josh Allen brought 8-6-1 Gardiner within a goal with a second-half goal to make it 2-1. Kaleb Smith turned away three of 10 shots.

Mount View 1, John Bapst 0 (PK)

At Bangor, Mount View made all three of its penalty kicks while John Bapst converted just one of four attempts as the No. 11 Mustangs upset the No. 6 Crusaders.

Justin Pierel, Conner Schmidt and Ben Fox scored on penalty kicks for 7-7-1 Mount View. Nick Knight saved 16 of 24 shots.

Andre Good made 7-7-1 John Bapst’s lone penalty kick. Casey Hull turned away 13 of 22 shots.

Ellsworth 5, Bucksport 0

At Ellsworth, Kaleb Danico scored one goal and assisted on another to help lead Ellsworth to the victory over Bucksport.

Andrew Austin, Dana Austin, Zach Emeigh and Matt Duhaime each scored a goal for the 13-1-1 Ellsworth Eagles. Jordan Carter and Justin Kane combined to make seven saves on 11 shots.

For the 5-9-1 Golden Bucks, Joe Goodin made nine saves on 16 shots.

Old Town 1, Central 0

At Old Town, Janis Schaefer scored on a direct kick with 4:05 left in regulation to lift No. 7 Old Town over No. 10 Central.

Alex Caballero saved seven shots for the 8-5-2 Coyotes.

Cole Haskell turned away 14 of 15 shots for 6-6-3 Central.

Erskine 3, Caribou 2

At South China, Jacob Miller broke a 2-2 tie with an assist from Devon Veilluex with 6:29 left in regulation as No. 5 Erskine Academy defeated No. 12 Caribou.

Ryan Hall and Miller scored first-half goals for 8-4-3 Erskine. Zach Busmanis made six saves off 16 shots.

Caribou erased a 2-0 deficit with goals by Seth Sager and Cameron Anderson. Chad McCarthy assisted Sager’s first-half goal and Anderson scored in the second half on a penalty kick with 11 minutes remaining. Eric Brown saved six of nine shots for the 7-6-2 Vikings.

Class C

Lee 2, Houlton 1

At Lee, Jake Kuester scored the winner off a Dean MacDonald header with 4:15 left in the first half to lift No. 8 Lee Academy over No. 9 Houlton.

Claudius Kessler tied it off a MacDonald corner kick with eight minutes left in the first. A.J. Harris saved 17 of 22 shots for the 7-7-1 Pandas.

Gary Fowler scored with 29:33 left in the first off a James Bates corner kick to give 4-10-1 Houlton the 1-0 lead. Ryan Vanbuskirk made 10 saves off 17 shots.

Calais 4, George Stevens 0

At Calais, Jeff Johnston had a hat trick as No. 7 Calais shut down No. 10 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.

Fabrisio Soboranis also scored for the 11-4-1 Blue Devils. Steve Rogers provided two assists while Ben Pagels and Josh Gillespie also had assists. Jordan Leeman saved all nine shots.

Nate Hines saved 18 of 22 shots for 5-9-1George Stevens.

Penobscot Valley 1, Piscataquis 0

At Howland, Ethan Babineau scored off a Charlie Gardner assist with 33:10 remaining in regulation to lead No. 6 Penobscot Valley to victory over No. 11 Piscataquis of Guilford.

Jacob Jones stopped eight of 10 shots for the 11-2-2 Howlers.

Corbin Shufelt turned away 14 of 18 shots for the 6-7-2 Pirates.

Class D

CAHS 2, Calvary Chapel 1

At University College of Bangor, Manny Martinez broke the 1-1 tie by scoring 20 minutes into the second half to lift No. 10 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill over No. 7 Calvary Chapel of Orrington.

Martinez also scored the game’s first goal four minutes into the first half. Tyler Rusby saved five of six shots for the 9-4-2 Panthers.

Dominique Veilleux scored off a Stephen Berenyi assist 10 minutes into the second to tie it at 1-1. Freshman Devon Warman recorded 12 saves off 14 shots for 6-7-2 Calvary Chapel.

So. Aroostook 6, Highview Chr. 0

At Dyer Brook, three players scored two goals each as No. 5 Southern Aroostook shut out No. 12 Highview Christian.

David Dubois, Dakota Sleeper and Patrick Goodall each scored twice for the 9-5-1 Warriors. Logan Desmond, Tyler Robinson, Anthony Diaferio, Dubois and Sleeper recorded assists. Dillon Boulier stopped six of seven shots.

Stefan Rowe turned away 29 of 37 shots for 9-4 Highview Christian of Charleston.

Easton 5, Shead 2

At Easton, Corey White and Brad Trask each had two goals and an assist as the fourth-Bears Easton downed No. 13 Shead of Eastport.

Jonah Bacon added a goal for the 11-2-1 Bears. Cody Thompson saved 12 of 14 shots.

Tommy Pottle and Dave Medeiros scored for 6-7 Shead. Caleb Ricker provided an assist. Tyler Mitchell made eight saves on 13 shots.

Woodland 1, Wisdom 0

At Woodland, Chad James scored the winner off a Ben Sears assist with 3:50 left in the first half to lift No. 6 Woodland past No. 11 Wisdom.

Todd Wormell saved all 10 shots for the 10-4-1 Dragons.

Curtis Collins made nine saves on 10 shots for 7-7-1 Wisdom.

Fort Fairfield 1, Ashland 0

At Fort Fairfield, Josh Churchill scored off a Travis Noyes assist with 5:48 remaining in regulation to hand the No. 8 Fort Fairfield Tigers a 1-0 schoolboy soccer win over No. 9 Ashland in an Eastern Maine Class D prelim Saturday.

Austin Dufour made nine saves off 12 shots for the 9-5-1 Tigers.

Bobby Gardiner turned away five of 14 shots for the 9-6 Hornets.

Saturday’s prelim winners advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinal round.

Field hockey

Class B

Winslow 1, Mount View 0

At Thorndike, Morgan Stuart scored in the second half with 18:10 remaining in the game to push No. 3 Winslow past No. 2 Mount View.

Emma Walters saved both shots for 13-3 Winslow.

Juni Garvin stopped eight of nine shots and Cassandra St. Clair made a save for 11-5 Mount View.

Nokomis 3, Belfast 0

At Newport, Erin Knight scored a goal and added two assists as No. 1 Nokomis shut out No. 4 Belfast.

Alison Berg had a goal and an assist for the 13-1-2 Warriors and Sabrina Vaillancourt added a goal. Sophomore Maria Adams saved all four shots she faced to earn her eighth shutout.

Paxton Mohney stopped two of five shots for 10-6 Belfast.

Class C

Stearns 2, John Bapst 1 (OT)

At Millinocket, Paige Curtis scored an unassisted goal with 6:48 remaining in overtime to give No. 3 Stearns the win over No. 7 John Bapst of Bangor.

Amanda Kranich tied it at 1-1 with 26:46 left in regulation for 13-3 Stearns. Kirsten Marter turned away two of four shots.

Emily Tilton scored off a Tori Huckestein assist with 3:17 left in the first half for 6-9-1 John Bapst. Megan Smith saved four of 19 shots.

Girls soccer

Class D

Woodland 3, Cen. Aroostook 1

At Woodland, Molly White scored a goal in each half as No. 6 Woodland defeated No. 11 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.

Cristine Boomer also scored in the second half for 8-4-3 Woodland. Kelsey Warden and Julia Nicholas provided assists. Taylor Cochran stopped seven of 12 shots.

Brittany Mosher scored an unassisted second-half goal for the 5-10 Panthers. Vicki McIntyre saved 15 of 25 shots.
