CANDIDATE PROFILE

House District 18

Bangor-Orono area

Democrat

Jim Martin

Age: 43

Hometown: Orono

Address: 557 Forest Ave.

Education: Bachelor’s in social work, University of Maine

Family: Lives with partner of 13 years

Occupation: Web marketing consultant

Experience: As a graduate of the UMaine School of Social Work, I have worked with some of Maine’s most needy populations: adults with disabilities, youth at risk of substance abuse, and as a child protective caseworker. Later, I spent 12 years as a small-business owner working in the technology field.

Reason for running: I am running for the Maine House to: focus on developing an energy security plan for Maine’s future, growing small-business development in Maine and expanding access to quality, affordable health care in Maine. With the support of the voters, I will bring my experience and pragmatism to Augusta to address the tough issues we will face in the next legislative session.

Independent

Thomas Mooney

Age: 44

Hometown: Bangor

Address: 217 Elm St.

Web site: www.thomasmooney.net

Education: John Bapst High School, Husson College, University of Maine, Colby College, and Bangor Theological Seminary; BS in administration; graduate work in social psychology, communications and theology

Family: Married; one son

Occupation: Business developer for Work Opportunities Unlimited, Bangor

Experience: Automotive service adviser; business developer; legal and social services advocate for children, families, seniors and the disabled; delegate to both Republican and Democratic state conventions; legislative candidate in ’02 and ’06 (lost by 32 votes in ’06); state emergency foster care coordinator; U.S. Department of Commerce field representative; communications coordinator, Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust; civic-service organization officer; lay minister.

Reason for running: I have lived and served in this community my entire life. Public service for me is a calling, not an entitlement. I believe diversity and innovation to be key, not only to Maine’s economic problems, but to Maine’s political problems as well. Party machine politics-special interest influence continues to be a major obstacle to progress. We need independent, solution-oriented leadership.

Republican

Patrick J. Joyce

Hometown: Veazie

Address: 16 Highview Terrace

Reason for running: Candidate says he’s unable to run.
