Lodge owner in The County fatally crushed by bulldozer

MORO PLANTATION – A 70-year-old Moro Plantation man was crushed to death by his bulldozer late Friday afternoon, Maine State Police said Saturday.

Carroll Gerow was killed in the accident at the Bear Mountain Lodge, which he owned, on Route 11, state police Sgt. Tom Pelletier said. Moro Plantation is west of Houlton in Aroostook County.

According to Pelletier, Gerow was working on his John Deere bulldozer when it accidentally went into gear. The lurching threw him to the ground, and he was then crushed by the bulldozer.

Pelletier said the bulldozer then crashed into a pickup truck, pushing it into the roadway, before coming to rest against a tree in the woods across from the lodge.

A motorist, Francis Wright of Hudson, was traveling on Route 11 when he noticed the pickup in the roadway and the bulldozer still engaged against the tree. He later found Gerow on the lodge property.

Gerow suffered massive injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

State police Trooper Tim Saucier and Patten Ambulance went to the scene.
