PITTSFIELD – A Corinth woman suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries early Sunday when she crashed her 1997 Nissan sedan on Interstate 95.

Kaitlin Elliott, 20, was driving south on the interstate in Pittsfield at about 12:40 a.m. when she apparently lost control of her car at mile marker 143, about seven miles south of the Pittsfield exit.

“Speed was definitely a factor,” Maine state Trooper Jeffrey Beach said, “as was the weather. It was not raining at the time but there were very gusty, strong winds. The wind apparently buffeted her sideways and she overcorrected.”

Beach said Elliott’s car went into the median, rolled over and struck a tree, and she was trapped in the upside-down car for more than 20 minutes.

The Pittsfield Fire Department used extrication tools to remove Elliott, who was wearing her seat belt, Beach said.

She was taken by Sebasticook Valley Hospital Ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment.

Beach also gave credit to a bystander, Richard Sanders, 59, of Leeds, who stopped and rendered aid until rescue crews arrived.
