SEARSPORT – State police and Waldo County officials said Sunday afternoon that a fugitive who sparked a manhunt Thursday and Friday remains on the loose.

“We believe he has either left the area or has hurt himself,” Searsport Town Manager James Gilway said Sunday afternoon.

Randall Hofland, 55, of Stockton Springs allegedly pointed a gun at a Searsport police officer Thursday night during a seat belt enforcement roadblock on Route 1. He then drove through the roadblock to his home a short distance away. By the time his car was surrounded, Hofland had fled into the woods.

On Friday, a 2-mile section of Route 1 between Searsport and Stockton Springs was shut down along with a local school district, but the road was reopened by Friday afternoon, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

More than three dozen police officers, including the Maine State Police Tactical Team, have been searching for Hofland.

Hofland is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, about 200 pounds with a mustache and wearing dark clothing. Police say he may be armed with a handgun.
