UM police investigate vandalism reports

A basketball-size hole in the recently installed glass of the Maine Center for the Arts on the University of Maine campus in Orono may have been an act of vandalism.

There were several incidents of possible vandalism on campus this Homecoming Weekend, UMaine spokesman Joe Carr said Sunday, although it was unclear whether the hole in the MCA glass was caused by high wind in the area Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Other windows were broken in the area and garbage bins were overturned, Carr added.

Campus police were sorting out the incidents Sunday.

The broken glass at the MCA, which is undergoing renovation, was reported Sunday afternoon. The glassed-in area of the arts center will house a lobby. Pizzagalli Construction Co., the contractor, was to patch the hole Sunday. (Jessica Bloch, BDN)

A Bangor man was arrested Saturday evening after a domestic assault incident in which another man was involved.

Bangor police Sgt. Brad Johnston said Michael Stitham, 41, was charged with domestic assault, disorderly conduct and violating conditions of bail.

Johnston said Stitham had assaulted his girlfriend in an apartment building at 87 Ohio St. A downstairs tenant heard the commotion, Johnston said, and went upstairs to check on the noise. Stitham apparently grabbed the tenant by the shirt and neck and pushed him. Stitham was arrested at 7:23 p.m.

Stitham was on bail stemming from an Oct. 17 charge of not signing a summons. He was still in Penobscot County Jail Sunday evening. (Jessica Bloch, BDN)
