WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $2,859,635 in Federal Highway Emergency Relief funding to Maine.
U.S. Sens. Olympia J. Snowe and Susan M. Collins, R-Maine, said in a joint press release that the funding will be used to repair the damage on federal-aid highways caused by heavy rains and subsequent flooding that occurred in 2007 and 2008.
Counties eligible for the funding include Aroostook, Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, Waldo, York, Androscoggin, Cumberland, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford and Sagadahoc.
“We are pleased that these funds have been released,” Snowe and Collins said in the release. “With the impending winter, it is important that Maine roads be ready. This emergency funding will allow for needed improvements and repairs.”
