BANGOR – An Old Town man was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury for a series of burglaries over the summer.
Michael Schwartz, 29, allegedly took cash, jewelry, computers and other items that totaled more than $30,000 from homes in Old Town, Orono, Holden and Glenburn. He was indicted on seven counts of burglary and seven counts of theft by unauthorized taking.
Schwartz allegedly entered residences during the daytime when the owners were at work or not at home. He entered the houses through either an unlocked door or window, according to prosecutors.
He is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 21 in Penobscot County Superior Court, but it may be awhile before Schwartz is in front a judge. Greg Campbell, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County, said Monday that police believe Schwartz is out of state. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
If convicted, Schwartz faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000 because of the value of the items he allegedly stole. He allegedly took a safe containing $20,000 in cash and a ring valued at about $10,000.
