Sponsored by the UMaine Equine Management Co-op students, “along with members of our Equestrian and Standardbred Drill Teams,” Daly wrote, “some of the University’s wonderful, retired harness-racing mares (perhaps some even in costume) will be ready and waiting to greet children who would like to trick or treat” there.

Youngsters will enjoy stall-to-stall trick-or-treating and meeting Dewey, Daisy, Cheer and some other “truly remarkable horses,” Daly wrote.

It is the third, not second, annual event, and it will take place at noon Thursday, Oct. 30, not Oct. 12, in front of Fogler Library on the mall on the university campus in Orono.

Cindy Collins of MWWHC says the entertainment will be classical performances by university faculty and graduate students, and include readings of original works by area writers and poets.

The theme of the evening will be to celebrate women, their “accomplishments, triumphs, frailties, challenges, loss, joy,” Collins wrote, “and to honor the work of [the late] Mabel Wadsworth and the center that bears her name.”

Karylyn Lyman reports the Monson Recreation Committee is sponsoring a Harvest Dinner to help raise funds for “local fuel assistance.”

The boiled dinner of ham, cabbage, carrots and potatoes, along with coffee, punch and dessert begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Monson Gym.

Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for children, $15 for a family of four.

Proceeds will benefit people in need in the area.

This “fun” fundraiser also includes music and a 50-50 raffle, with the winning ticket being drawn at the dinner.

Here’s a twist on the hunters breakfast: Now you can eat after you hunt.
