Field hockey

Nokomis 1, Winslow 1 (susp.)

At Newport, Nokomis of Newport’s Sabrina Vaillancourt and Winslow’s Morgan Stuart swapped first-half goals before the rain intensified and resulted in the decision to suspend the game.

They did not start the second half.

The game will resume where it left off either today or Thursday depending upon the weather and the condition of the field.

Vaillancourt opened the scoring at the 24:16 mark.

A long hit by Erin Knight was tipped by Jordin McGinnis over to Vaillancourt, who sliced from left to right in the circle and slipped the ball past the left leg of Winslow goalie Emma Walters.

Winslow equalized 5:36 later when Mindy Fowler’s free hit to the far post was swatted across the goalmouth by Katie Irwin to Stuart, who deposited it into the half-empty cage.

Knight found the back of the cage with 11 minutes left in the half but her stomach-high shot through a crowded goalmouth was ruled to have been a dangerous hit and the goal was waved off.

Walters made six saves on seven shots while Nokomis goalkeeper Maria Adams had four stops on nine shots.
