Winds cause damage Down East Trees down across the state as low pressure system lifts northward

High winds scoured much of Maine on Tuesday night and into Wednesday, downing trees and knocking out power to hundreds of customers, mostly in Down East areas.

Bangor Hydro crews worked through the night and into the day Wednesday to deal with nearly 800 outages. By noon Wednesday, that number had been reduced to just 54, all in Hancock County.

The company said high winds brought a number of tree limbs down onto power lines, causing the outages.

Meteorologist Joe Hewitt of the National Weather Service office in Caribou said Wednesday afternoon that the storm did the most damage in Down East parts of the state.

“Most of the damage was down in Hancock County,” said Hewitt. “There were numerous trees down in those areas. There was damage to a ferry terminal in Bass Harbor due to the high winds.”

Downed trees and power outages also were reported in the Bangor area, according to Hewitt.

Some power outages were reported Wednesday morning around Millinocket Lake and Schoodic Lake for a few hours after high winds downed some utility lines.

Brief assorted outages also were reported in the Lincoln Lakes region.

While some trees were knocked down and a brief power outage was reported in Van Buren, Aroostook County escaped the brunt of the high winds.

“There were some reports of trees down in the Caribou and Presque Isle areas,” Hewitt said. “There was a brief power outage in Van Buren, but other than that, The County escaped the brunt of it.”

The National Weather Service said low pressure lifting northward through eastern Quebec produced a variety of weather across the region overnight.

Showers and thunderstorms moved through portions of central and eastern Maine during the first half of Tuesday night with heavy downpours.

A cold front crossing the area brought much colder air into the region and changed rain showers to snow showers in the Connecticut Valley and the mountains of Maine and New Hampshire, the weather service said.
