GARLAND – Penobscot County and state police were called to a residence on Exeter Road at about 7 p.m. Thursday after a report of an armed man holding a woman hostage.

Penobscot County Sheriff Glenn Ross confirmed late Thursday night that there was a “standoff involving one person and the events are still unfolding.”

Despite early police radio communication indicating that a woman might be inside, Ross said, “There is no hostage.”

Ross said at about 9:30 p.m. that a state police tactical team was en route to Garland.

Few other details were available late Thursday, but county and state police dispatchers confirmed that officers from both agencies had been sent to the residence.

Police set up roadblocks to keep motorists away from the scene.
