Red Cross presents Halloween safety tips

BANGOR – Ghouls and goblins will take over the night on Friday, Oct. 31, but even scary creatures need to celebrate Halloween safely. The holiday’s greatest hazards aren’t vampires and villains, but falls, costume mishaps and automobile accidents. The local Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross provides these “lucky 13” tips for a safe Halloween:

Map out your route so adults know all will find their way home. From the bravest of superheroes to the noblest of knights, everyone should bring and use a flashlight.

If you visit a house where a stranger resides, accept treats at the door but don’t go inside.

When you get ready to put on your Halloween costume or disguise, use face paint instead of masks and keep your eyes uncovered so you can see better in the dark.

Wear light-colored clothing to be seen in the dark.

Whether you walk, slither or sneak, do it on the sidewalks and not in the street.

As you roam through the neighborhood collecting your treats, look both ways before crossing the street.

Have a grownup inspect your candy when you’re done trick-or-treating to remove open packages and choking hazards before eating.
