Route 11 crash hurts Eagle Lake woman

WALLAGRASS – An Eagle Lake woman escaped serious injury Thursday after being involved in a single-vehicle crash.

Joan Dow, 72, was driving south on Route 11 at about 3:10 p.m. when her 2008 Hyundai sport utility vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole along the road, according to Deputy Lawrence Goff of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department.

“She basically sheared the pole off at the bottom,” Goff said.

Goff estimated damage to the Hyundai at $3,500 to $4,000 and to the pole, for which he said Dow would be billed, at $2,500 to $3,000.

Dow was wearing her safety belt and her vehicle’s air bags deployed, Goff said. He said Dow was taken to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent for treatment of what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

No other information about her medical condition was available late Thursday.

Goff said it was not clear what caused Dow’s vehicle to leave the roadway. The accident remains under investigation.
