Applications for groups or businesses that want to participate in the Rotary Club of Bangor’s holiday Parade of Lights, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, need to be submitted by Monday, Nov. 10, reports parade chairwoman Barbara McDade.

Applications may be obtained by calling McDade at the Bangor Public Library, 947-8336, or at www.bangorrotary.org.

The theme of this year’s all-inclusive parade is “Making Dreams Real,” which the Rotary hopes will reflect the organization’s “hope for the world,” McDade announced the theme and event, which is expected to encompass “all of the diverse celebrations that take place, throughout the season, in Maine and around the world.”

The parade, which has space for 70 units, is expected to feature scenes celebrating everything from Christmas to Hanukkah, Ramadan and Kwanzaa.

Owner Don Hanson hopes you won’t forget to “vote” in the Green Acres Kennel Shop Pet President Election by contributing $1 to either the Cat Party or the Dog Party to benefit Eastern Area Agency on Aging’s Furry Friends Food Bank.

Proceeds will be distributed to area seniors to help people on fixed incomes to keep their pets.

Jennifer Therrien of Challenger Learning Center of Maine has announced that After-School Engineering will be offered for children in grades three through seven from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 4, and continuing through Tuesday, Nov. 25, at CLC, 30 Venture Way in Bangor.

The cost of the four-week series is $48 per child, and sibling discounts are available.

Topics to be covered will include solar cars, hovercrafts, hot-air balloons and fuel cells.

Elizabeth Clayton of Eastern Maine Community College reports the next exhibit in the 2008-09 EMCC Library Gallery Series features James Toothaker’s Masking Tape Series 1 through 52 Mixed Media.

Toothaker’s work will be exhibited between Monday, Nov. 3, and Monday, Dec. 15, in the EMCC library on the second floor of Katahdin Hall on the Bangor campus.

The viewing is free and open to the public. The public also is invited to attend a reception for the artist from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the EMCC library.

President Jay Barnes invites you to attend a “panel presentation followed by a question-and-answer discussion on the subject of Putting the Garden and Your Plants to Bed for the Winter.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at the Hancock County Cooperative Extension office on Boggy Brook Road in Ellsworth.

The panel will consist of the club’s professional gardeners: Barnes, Elizabeth Curran and Lynn Tscheiller, who are both Master Gardner volunteers.

Bangor Art Society is issuing a call for original artwork in the form of “paintings, drawings, photographs, hand-pulled prints and sculpture,” reports Leigh Butler. It’s for the organization’s sixth annual Holiday Art Auction on Nov. 29 in Bangor.

Artists retain 50 percent of the sale price, while the other half goes to the society.

Artwork should be dropped off between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, or 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Wellman Commons, 300 Union St. in Bangor.

Harry Hafford e-mailed that the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Corp. is raffling a 2009 silver Honda Scooter to raise money to construct a footbridge that will meet Americans With Disabilities Act guidelines. It will span a narrow strip of wetlands on the grounds of the Caribou cemetery.

This area, Hafford explained, “divides the roadway and the road in front of our POW-MIA Remembrance Park. This strip of wetlands makes for difficult access, especially for seniors and disabled persons.”

Construction of a footbridge “will do much to resolve that problem,” he said.

Eight hundred tickets will be sold for $10 each, and the drawing is Dec. 13.
