Skowhegan tips Brunswick in ‘A’ quarterfinal

SKOWHEGAN – Cody Vigue’s two-point rush in the fourth quarter turned a deficit into a lead as fourth-seeded Skowhegan edged No. 5 Brunswick 22-21 in an Eastern Maine Class A football quarterfinal Friday night.

Vigue also preserved the win when he blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt by Brunswick on the final play of the game.

Billy Clark scored three touchdowns, two in the fourth quarter, to lead Skowhegan.

Clark scored in the second quarter on a 12-yard run and converted the two-point conversion on a rush to cut Brunswick’s lead to 14-8.

Clark later scored on an 84-yard run and an 8-yard run in the fourth with just 48.6 seconds left to play.

Brunswick’s Robbie Basquez scored three touchdowns in the first half. He scored in the first quarter on a 2-yard run and had a pair of 1-yard scoring runs in the second quarter.

Rashon Edgerton converted all three extra-point kick attempts.

Gardiner 21, Hampden 20

At Gardiner, Dalton Eldridge scored the tying touchdown on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter and Tom Cook kicked the extra point to lead No. 3 Gardiner past No. 6 Hampden Academy.

Hampden had a chance to retake the lead with two minutes left, but a fourth-and-goal, 23-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright.

Gardiner’s Mike Denham threw two touchdown passes to Forrest Chadwick in the second quarter. Cook was 3-for-3 on extra-point kicks.

Nolan Turner scored all three touchdowns for the Broncos, starting with a 50-yard punt return for a TD in the first quarter. In the second quarter, he scored on an 87-yard run and a 1-yard run.

Bucksport 22, MCI 0

At Bucksport, Nate Warren and Kyle McGeechan combined for 302 rushing yards as the top-ranked Golden Bucks scored 16 fourth-quarter points to defeat the No. 8 Maine Central Institute Huskies 22-0.

McGeechan scored on runs of 90 and 70 yards and Warren on an 11-yard scamper. The two finished with 141 and 161 yards on the ground, respectively.

Robbie Winters had five solo tackles, assisted on nine more and had a sack while Andrew Findlay notched a fumble recovery and six tackles for a Bucksport defense which limited the Huskies to 130 total yards.

Sam Carmichael recorded an interception for the winners.

Shawn Bennett paced MCI with 41 yards on 10 carries.
