PORTLAND – Fares soon will go up for the Downeaster passenger train that runs between Portland and Boston.
The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which operates the Amtrak service, is taking public comments through the end of November on the proposed fares.
A final determination on the increases will be made in December, with fares scheduled to go up on Jan. 1.
The plan now calls for some one-way fares to increase by $2 in some markets and for multiride passes in some markets to go up 10 percent. No fare increases are proposed for riders departing from stations in Maine.
Train officials say the increases are necessary because of rising fuel and operating costs.
