NEW YORK – An Orono man was Maine’s top finisher in Sunday’s New York City Marathon.
Erik McCarthy was the top person from Maine with a time of 2 hours, 57 minutes, 2 seconds. The top woman was Melissa Johnson of Minot, who had a time of 3:28:13.
In all, more than 38,000 runners started the race, with 34 people from Maine finishing the race.
The overall winners were Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain for the women and Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil for the men.
Radcliffe defended her title to become the second woman to win the race three times. Gomes dos Santos won the men’s race for the second time in three years, completing the course in 2:08:43.
