Leads sought in possible child abduction attempt

SHERMAN – Investigators with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday were investigating a possible child abduction attempt that happened Sunday.

No leads had been uncovered by Tuesday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Forrest Dudley of the Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened at around 2 p.m. Sunday on Route 2 in Sherman.

Dudley said Tuesday that a 9-year-old girl had gone outside of her home to put the family dog on its chain when two men in a full-size SUV pulled up and began speaking with the child.

The investigator said the driver of the vehicle got out of the SUV and gestured for the child to come over to the vehicle. He then said, “Come on.”

The girl ran into her residence and reported the incident to her mother. By the time the woman got outside, the vehicle had left the scene.

It was last seen driving south on Route 2.

According to the girl, the SUV had a two-tone paint job, with dark blue paint on the top and silver paint on the bottom. The man behind the wheel is believed to have been between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall. The child said he was wearing a blue polo-type shirt with a collar and ripped jeans.

He had short, trimmed brown hair and a brown mustache and had a deep voice. The passenger was described as wearing a dirty yellow rain-type jacket.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Aroostook County Crime Stoppers at 800-638-TIPS.
