Greenville girls capture crown State final set at Schenck

GREENVILLE – Saige Weeks scored on a direct kick from near midfield when the ball squirted through the arms of the goalkeeper with 28:47 remaining in the game, lifting Greenville by Rangeley 1-0 Wednesday for the Western Maine Class C girls soccer title.

It was the third meeting of the season between the teams. Rangeley won the game at Greenville and the contest played at Rangeley was a tie.

Sidney Richardson made six saves on eight shots for the 8-1-4 winners.

Emily Carrier made seven saves on 19 shots for Rangeley, which finished the season at 10-4-2.

Greenville advanced to Saturday’s 10 a.m. state-title game at Schenck High School in East Millinocket against Eastern Maine champ Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook.

Eastern Maine Class D

So. Aroostook 1, Ashland 0

At Dyer Brook, Brittany Charette’s goal 15 seconds into the second half off a Rochelle Nadeau pass lifted No. 1 Southern Aroostook by No. 2 Ashland for the Eastern Maine Class D title.

The Warriors of Dyer Brook advanced to Saturday’s state final at 10 a.m. against Western Maine champ Greenville at Schenck High School in East Millinocket.

Charette set up the winning goal when she stole the second half’s opening kickoff. She passed to the wing to Nadeau, who carried the ball down the field before sending it back to Charette who scored from about 12 yards out on a low shot into the right corner.

Emily Cummings made seven saves on eight shots for the 15-1-1 Warriors, who split with Ashland during the regular season, winning at home and losing in Ashland, both by 3-0 scores.

For the 12-4-1 Hornets, Taylor Baker made nine saves on 10 shots.

Boys soccer

Eastern Maine Class C

Washington Acd. 2, Madawaska 1

At Madawaska, Sung Min Kim scored off a goal-mouth scramble following a corner kick with four minutes remaining as second seed Washington Academy beat No. 1 Madawaska 2-1 to capture the Eastern Maine Class C boys soccer title.

The Raiders of East Machias improved to 16-1 while earning a berth in Saturday’s state final at Hampden Academy

Mike Knowles opened the scoring for WA by converting a Bret Lyons assist with 19:22 left in the first half.

Madawaska’s Nathan A. Beaulieu equalized eight minutes later by directing home a rebound that came off the post.

Bryce Colbeth made 10 saves on 15 saves for the winners while Nathan P. Beaulieu made nine stops on 15 shots for 14-1-2 Madawaska, the top seed.

Western Maine Class D

Richmond 9, Greenville 1

At Richmond, Jason Brown netted four goals including three in the second half to power top-seeded and undefeated Richmond by No. 2 Greenville for the Western Maine title.

The Lakers, who finished up at 9-3-2, suffered all three of their losses this season at the hands of Richmond.

Eric Murrin scored two goals while Andy Harrington posted one goal and four assists for the 16-0 Bobcats. Josh Brown and Tyler Cray each added a goal. Bruce Carver made nine saves of 10 shots.

Evan Bickford scored the only goal for Greenville in the second half. Alex Jardine made 19 saves on 28 shots.
