PERRY – With 93 percent of precincts reporting Wednesday, Washington County incumbents for the state Legislature held onto their seats, while Republican newcomers beat out their opponents.
The unofficial results indicated late Wednesday that 612 precincts had reported statewide and 675,672 of 942,825 registered voters participated in Tuesday’s election.
The biggest winner of the night in Washington County was state Sen. Kevin Raye, R-Perry. He walked away with more votes than his two opponents received together.
Raye garnered 10,503 votes, or 63.89 percent, to Democratic contender Karen Johnson of Machias’ 4,664, or 28.37 percent, and independent Dana Kadey of Princeton’s 1,271, 7.73 percent of the votes.
Howard McFadden, R-Dennysville, held onto his House District 30 seat against challenger Dennis L. Mahar, D-Pembroke, by a vote of 1,655, or 55.89 percent, to Mahar’s 1,306, or 44.11 percent.
Challenger Judy Alexander, R- Calais, was unable to unseat incumbent Anne Perry, D-Calais, for the House District 31 seat. Perry marshaled 2,233 votes, or 56.82 percent, to Alexander’s 1,697, or 43.18 percent.
Republicans dominated the race between newcomers. In the House District 32 race, Republican David Burns of Whiting garnered 2,093 votes, or 52.23 percent, to Democrat Katherine W. Cassidy of Machias’ 1,914 votes, or 47.77 percent.
In the other end of the county, Republican Dianne Tilton of Harrington, with a vote of 2,270, or 53.26 percent, won the race for the House District 33 seat. She defeated Democrat Marie C. Emerson of Addison, who garnered 1,992 votes, or 46.74 percent of the vote.
